The house was constructed in 1855 by John A. Packard, a local store owner. Mr. Packard was friendly with Ulysses S. Grant and even sheltered the general’s noisy horse, Cincinnati, in the original barn behind the home.

Two additions altered the footprint of the house before the end of the nineteenth century. Because the roof was never raised for these additions, the home features quirky architectural elements that always invoke a smile.

In the 1930’s, Maybelle’s Tea Room took up residence here, serving sweets, teas and eats to townsfolk and travelers alike. We even have a copy of her cookbook if you'd care to take a peek.

After that, various families came and went and the house was ultimately abandoned for several years. It fell into disrepair before being purchased in the 1980s and transformed into a Guest House.
